Graduated Drivers Licencing
Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) – What’s Changed
Alberta has made important changes to the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, making it easier for eligible drivers to exit probation.
Advanced road tests are no longer required to exit the GDL program.
Instead, drivers who meet the eligibility requirements can move to a full Class 5 or Class 6 licence without completing an advanced road test.

GDL Exit Eligibility
To exit the GDL program, drivers must:
-
Be at least 18 years old
-
Have completed 24 months of probationary driving
-
Be suspension‑free and demerit‑free for the past 12 months
Drivers who completed a Class 5 or Class 6 driver training program through a licensed driving school may be eligible to reduce their probationary period by up to 6 months.

How GDL Exit Works
-
Eligible drivers may be automatically exited from the GDL program by the Government of Alberta.
-
Eligible drivers can also visit a registry office to confirm their status.
-
If eligible, you can exchange your GDL licence for a non‑GDL licence at no charge.
-
Drivers who are not yet eligible will remain in the GDL program until all requirements are met.
GDL restrictions remain in place until you receive your non‑GDL licence or official confirmation from the Government of Alberta.

Changes to Road Tests
While the advanced road test has been removed, Class 5 and Class 6 road tests now include enhanced safety elements.
The Class 5 road test has been extended to approximately 45 minutes, placing a stronger focus on safe driving skills.
These updates are designed to streamline the GDL program, improve road safety, and make the transition to a full licence more straightforward for eligible drivers.
