Authorization for Vehicle Services
On Oct 26, 2026, the paper Authorization for Vehicle Services forms has been eliminated, and instead individuals will need to complete an online authorization through their own Alberta.ca account.
The paper form is no longer accepted.
WHEN DOES AN ONLINE AUTHORIZATION NEED TO BE COMPLETED?
A vehicle service is being completed on behalf of an owner, lessee, registrant, or licence plate owner who is not present at the registry office
āORā
A vehicle is to be registered in a name that differs from the name or names shown on the ownership document, and all parties listed can’t be present at the registry office
Each person listed on an ownership document and plate will need to complete an authorization.
HOW CAN THIS BE COMPLETED ONLINE?
-
Log in to your verified Alberta.ca account linked HERE
-
Complete the online Authorization for Vehicle Services form. You will need to identify the person (or company) you are authorizing and specify what service you want them to complete for you.
-
Submit the form and provide all the supporting documents to the person coming in for you. They may need a bill of sale/lease, insurance documents, etc.
-
You will get a confirmation email. The person attending the office will need the relevant information from you, such as your MVID or plate number.
-
The authorization is valid for 14 days only. Submission of the form does not guarantee service – the documents presented must support the requested service.
CAN I AUTHORIZE A DEALERSHIP TO COMPLETE A SERVICE?
Yes. You will need to fill out the dealership information, including their MVID, in the section on who you are authorizing. The dealership will decide which specific individual will be authorized to sign on their behalf.
ā
WHAT ABOUT CORPORATIONS?
Only an individual can complete an online authorization; this does not apply to corporations. If you have signing authority for a corporation, you do not need an authorization.
If you do not have signing authority for a business, you will need a specific power of attorney, or a corporate authorization instead.
WHAT IF I CAN’T MAKE AN ALBERTA.CA ACCOUNT?
For help accessing or creating an Alberta.ca account, visit Alberta.ca HERE
Without an Alberta.ca account, you would require a Power of Attorney specific to the requested service (not just a general POA) that includes all relevant details of the transaction.
